Dr Caitriona Dennis - Educational Staff Development Manager
Academic Background: I completed a PhD in Structural Biology before undertaking a post-doctoral researcher position within the Astbury Centre and School of Dentistry at the University of Leeds. I then moved to a scientist position at the New York State Department of Health. During my post-doc position I gained a PG Cert in Innovation Management and have also gained a University of Leeds Teaching and Research Award and become a Fellow of Higher Education Academy as part of my current role.
Can you tell us a little bit about your job role? I lead the Faculty development in School of Medicine relating to the delivery of the educational programmes (MBChB, Diploma Physician Associate Studies). I manage and deliver a programme of Continuing Professional Development events that support the teaching of our students whilst on placement. I facilitate networks and provide opportunities for developing clinical teachers and support their activities within the Yorkshire region with an aim to sustain an excellent student experience.
What are the best parts of your job? Meeting a wide range of people, working with a wide range of professionals, making new contacts, being able to do a wide variety of tasks, travelling around the region.
What are the worst parts of your job? Writing large reports with very short and strict deadlines.
What advice would you give to postdocs looking to get a similar role? Know that your experience in the research field is very applicable to many roles. Translate your skills, focus on your skills in communicating – giving talks, writing reports and papers, collaborating with others are all skills I use every day. Look for teaching opportunities – supervise students, run revision classes.
